Conficker Maintenance Alert

Conficker – what does it mean to me?

Conficker — it’s on the news at night.  You can see stories about it on the web.  But, what does it mean to you?  Well, if you’re a Convergence customer, it shouldn’t amount to much.  That’s because Convergence Networks has leveraged Deverra® monitoring technology to secure all workstations and servers from the recently publicized Conficker worm. We have taken steps to ensure vulnerabilities in the Windows Operating system have been patched to block infection and also used customized software to scan and remove existing Conficker infections. Microsoft released emergency patch MS08-67 on October 15, and was being installed by our Deverra® system shortly after. Over the past 24 hours we have scanned client systems and feel confident Conficker will have no direct impact on any systems managed under Deverra®.

A few changes…

To better serve you, our customers, we’re changing the configuration of our monitoring/administration software just a bit.  Specifically, we will be enabling the Deverra “shield” in the system tray.  For most of our clients, this is a change we’ll be making today.  For others, we’ll be making this change in the coming weeks–contact your TSD if you don’t see the change or you have any questions.

The way this adjustment will impact you is that you may see a little square icon with a small blue letter ‘C’ in the lower right-hand corner of your computer screen (by the clock).  This is simply a feature we’ll be activating on your system as a convenience.  If you hover your mouse over it, it displays your system name.  This allows us a way to positively confirm your system’s identity when we’re doing work on it.  In addition, if you right-click the icon, the software is programmed to display your unique phone number to directly reach your dedicated support team, as well as give you the option to force a refresh to ensure we’ve got the latest status update on your machine when we’re working with you.

While the above item may seem like a small change, we did want to get the word out to ensure we didn’t concern anyone.  And, of course, we’re always looking for ways to better serve our customers and provide a more timely, more effective experience.  So, look for the little Convergence ‘C.’  We’ll be standing by to help you with any questions or concerns you might run into…
