IT in Tough Economic Times
by Shane Boyle
What a wild ride so far! 2008 is proving to be quite an unpredictable environment for business. For a lot of industries, growth is nowhere in site and ratcheting down costs makes great sense. Information Technology historically has been viewed as a cost center for most businesses, but delivering IT services with the needs of the business in mind can make IT a tool for profit. This month’s feature article takes a look at Information Technology and how it can provide great value in any economic climate.
Rising fuel costs have impacted nearly every market vertical in the United States today, leaving a lot of employers and employees wondering how transportation costs can be reduced. Working from home is a great idea, but traditional technologies have made this option a costly endeavor. A recent development in remote technology has eliminated a lot of the cost of working remotely and made it as easy as going to a web page to gain access to one’s office computer. Leveraging software called Deverra Anywhere, many of Convergence Networks’ clients have complete access to all of the applications running on their network from their home pc, and it does not involve installing a special server on the network. Is letting your staff work at home the complete cost-saving option for every company? Probably not-but knowing it’s a painless option could really help businesses adapt quickly in these tough times. Other recent improvements in technology have allowed for remote laptop users to completely backup their systems to USB hard drives automatically without purchasing expensive software to manage the process. Anyone who has had a system fail knows the pain of losing their settings and any work saved on the desktop. Protecting traveling data has always been a challenge, but now it can be transparent to the end user and keep the value of intellectual property protected. These few technology improvements are just a few of ways that a proactive support team like Convergence Networks can bring positive, cost-effective change to business.
Spending or deciding not to spend on technology during a slumping economy can be a double-edged sword. Investing too much in your infrastructure reduces financial choices for the business, whereas not having enough investment can actually lead to employee frustration. That can drive your top employees to your competition. Regardless of the choices made, having a strong partner that knows technology and how to leverage it for the financial support of the business can make all the difference when consumers start spending again, ensuring your business is well-poised to defeat the competition. All Convergence Networks customers have access to CTO-level resources (your TSDs), and it’s with those resources the right technology decisions for the business can be decided.
Does the future look bright for your business? Recession, growth, or merely making it through the day: the Convergence Networks Team is standing right beside you, prepared to dig in when tough decisions need to be made and ready to drive forward when the business financials say go. It is not about technology-it is really about your business and delivering services that compliment your operational goals, both present and future.
