CEO Corner
by Dave Murray
Dude!
For those of you that have been anxiously awaiting the sequel to last month’s CEO corner here it is. If you recall, I referenced a particular television commercial that featured the word “dude” as the only human communication in the entire commercial. The commercial was both entertaining for me and it reminded me of the way that subtle inflections in our voice can take on such a varied meaning – at least when we are communicating verbally. (For the curious, there are 12 different inflections to communicate the word dude.) But, in the business world much of our communication is done using emails where voice inflection is absent. To some degree we can take some lessons from our kids who have invented some fairly smart ways to inflect emotion in their text messages. For example, action words such as the word *wink* are preceded and ended by an asterisk. Many of us can send our emails using bold, italics, underlined, or all three when we really need to deliver the right inflection. And, finally, as many of us have learned, do not compose your email in 100% capital letters, because it means you are yelling.
Happy Independence Day!
(all month long)

And enjoy those hot summer days and night!
