The Move II: The Details You Didn’t Have Before
by John Stephens
We’re moving. We’re moving. We’re moving. I just wanted to get that out of the way in case anyone hadn’t read and remembered our feature article from last month’s newsletter. That was our first announcement, and of course, as most first announcements go, it didn’t have a great deal of detail. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, we can begin our next installment and give you…wait for it…all the details you didn’t have before.
So, the first question that probably comes to everyone’s mind in regard to a change of address is “To where are you moving?” That’s a sensible enough question, so I’ll give you a sensible and to-the-point answer. Our new address appears below:
Convergence Networks
4252 SE International Way, Suite A
Milwaukie, OR 97222
And the second question, of course, is “When are you moving?” That too has a simple and direct answer. We’re moving over the weekend beginning Friday, April 3, 2009.
Now the first two questions were the easy ones. After that, I’m sure there are some of you entertaining additional questions, probably foremost of which is something along the lines of “How will this affect my support?” We’ve got answers to that question as well, and here they are. First, we’re staging our move to minimize or eliminate interruptions in service. What that means is that we’re not going to take down our Service Desk, at least not during business hours. Instead we’ll maintain standard operations through 5:00pm on Friday, 3 April. Once 5:00 rolls around, we’ll cut our phone service to the new location. Our personnel will move over the weekend as well. The net result is there should be no down-time for our Service Desk or your ability to reach our support teams. That answer may leave you with another question–”What about my TSD?” Well, the answer is the same. Our Technical Services Management corps will also move to their new digs so that your ability to reach them will not affected. Access to our pager, likewise, will not be affected as we’ve coordinated the swing of our phone systems so that it will be transparent. All in all, our major physical move will largely be a non-event for you, our customers.
There is one way in which our support operations may be affected. Over the course of the weekend, we have to move all our internal servers to their new home. Our monitoring and administration server is located at our co-location facility, so our ability to connect to our clients and remediate issues will not be affected. However, the other tools we use-such as our ticketing system-will be offline for a couple of hours on Friday night. What this means to clients is we won’t have immediate access to existing tickets and some documentation. We’ll still have our crack personnel, ready to troubleshoot the toughest of problems, but we won’t be able to look back into tickets for a short while during the period of time it takes to tear our servers down, move them to our new facility (a hop, skip, and a jump away), and then get them set back up again.
So now you have it-all those details you didn’t have before. Hopefully, knowing these little gems only gives you more information and doesn’t cause any undue concern. Our support operations are expected to only be minimally impacted, and all core services will be online throughout. If you have any questions or concerns whatsoever about the availability of services-or any other questions for that matter-please direct them to your Technical Services Director. Next time we talk, I’ll be writing from our new facility. We’ll catch you then.
