HDIT – High Definition I.T.
High-definition television (HDTV) is just around the corner for all of us. Wow! What a huge improvement over the way we once viewed television. This whole notion of HDTV got me thinking about “High-definition IT” (HDIT). Not only is there a revolution going on with HDTV, but there’s a revolution going on in IT as well. Some of that revolution is a quiet burial of older technology and some of the revolution is a wild fanfare of new whiz-bang things. If you have never heard of HDIT before it’s because I just coined the phrase as we speak. But, before we get into the discussion let’s start with a quick analogy.
When we go to our car in the morning to go to work; we get in, we start the car, and off we go. But, it’s those morning we start our routine as usual, turn the key, and nothing happens that changes our entire day. For me, the first thing that happens is I get emotional. Hard to believe; right? But, the reality is I start worrying – How will I get to work? How much will this cost? How long will it take to do the repairs? I think you get the picture.
What I really want is for my car to work day in and day out. Oh… and I would really like it if someone could tell me in advance that my car may not start. It is a proven fact that good maintenance will prolong the life of the car, reduce operating costs, and reduce the risk of me being stranded.
Computers are exactly the same way. At anytime during the day we just want our computers to work! Isn’t it that simple? The answer: no! The same as fan belt and oil replacement is to cars; monitoring and scanning is to computers. That’s where HDIT comes in. Today, IT is rapidly evolving to a more reliable, automated process. And, a process that will spot problems in advance compared to waiting until a day when the computer will not start up. The process isn’t perfect yet, but let me explain.
At the desktop level – where most of our customers spend their day – we are continuously monitoring your computer for indications of problems. This high‐definition approach allows us to be proactive instead of reactive. In other words, we actually do something when we get an alert. As an example, over the last year we have been able to detect a significant number of hard drives that were showing signs of failure. We were able to replace those hard drives and save the user from a significant amount of down time and potential loss of data. Instead of being down for hours or maybe days, as well as possibly losing critical business data, instead a user can go to lunch when we arrive onsite and come back to a reliable repaired computer. Business continues uninterrupted.
Our new HDIT approach also makes sure that your computer is periodically scanned, defragged, and rebooted – either at night or over the weekend. Some of us are very familiar with the question: “Have you tried rebooting your computer?” It is often times a light‐hearted joke. But, in reality a reboot performs critical functions for your computer that, coupled with ongoing maintenance, keeps it running reliably and consistently.
The intent of HDIT is to have your computing environment evolve to the point where you can rely on your computer day after day. In comparison to the car analogy, it is like having your own personal mechanic working on your car at night so that you can drive around during the day with confidence. Our goal at Convergence is to deliver history‐making customer service. HDIT is one more way that we are achieving that goal. And you don’t even have to upgrade your subscription or buy an expensive converter box!
