Race and Walk
About a month ago I contacted a friend who I had not spoken with in several years. It’s funny how that goes. We develop a great relationship with someone who we are pleased to call a friend, then “life stuff” gets in the way and we lose track of the person. The resulting conversation with him was one of those moments when you get a slap on the side of the head that immediately grabs your attention. He told me that his wife had died from breast cancer. I about fell off my chair in shock, because this woman was young, vibrant, and full of life, and she left 3 children behind. We spoke again several times during that following week and I learned so much more about a life that ended too quickly.
My week continued on a similar trend when I spoke to another friend who broke the news to me that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was beginning chemotherapy. I was again caught off guard with that unexpected news. As if this were not enough bad news, one week later I was speaking to a friend at church and she told me she was going into the hospital for a radical mastectomy. I wondered how this could be happening. Part of me walked around at some level of shock and depression for a few weeks. This is the type of news that in a single instance is overwhelming. But three women who I know had been affected by cancer.
Soon after this unbelievable sequence of events unfolded, one of my co-workers – Deanna Taylor – walked up to me and asked, “Do you want to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure this year?”
My response was quick. “Where do I sign up?”
This will be my first year taking an active role in the fight against breast cancer. I guess it was not a little slap on the side of the head to get my attention, but rather a 4×4 post! If you are reading this and your heart is moved or your eyes are filled with tears for a woman you know that has been impacted by breast cancer, maybe the upcoming Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure is something that can help. If you have any interest in joining Deanna on September 21st please email her by clicking on her name. She will send you some information to join her team. I hope to see you there.
It’s Time for Back to School!

We hope everyone had a great summer.
